It's True: The 2018 BMW M5 Comes with All-Wheel Drive

BMW lovers, like the team here at BMW of Catonsville, probably already know a thing or two about the BMW M5. With a sleek look, advanced technology, and high performance, the M5 is assuredly a force to be reckoned with. That being said, there is one thing it hasn’t had in the past: all-wheel drive.

BMW fans will be excited to know that's now changed.

After years of speculating, BMW has finally confirmed that an all-wheel drive option will be available for the 2018 M5 sedan. Arriving in 2018, this next-generation M5 will also have BMW’s highly acclaimed M xDrive system. M xDrive enables a fleet-footed, rear-biased setup by only engaging the front wheels when the rear wheels aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road. This allows the BMW M5 with M xDrive to behave predictably, and, as a result, be easily controlled by the driver.

“The new drivetrain technology—making its debut on the new BMW M5—therefore combines all of the agility and precision of standard rear-wheel drive with the supreme poise and traction of the all-wheel-drive system,” explains Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH.

Along with its notably enhanced performance, the BMW M5 also boasts the greater everyday practicality, poise, and qualities of a business sedan, making it a truly unique model.

“The new BMW M5 can be piloted with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy on both the race track and the open road – and in various weather conditions,” says van Meel.

Drivers can choose from three different M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD) to adapt to any driving situation they encounter. The BMW M5 will have a 4.4-liter V8 turbocharged engine, allowing the vehicle to out-perform its predecessor in terms of power output and torque. Other impressive enhancements include new turbochargers; higher injection pressure; and a modified, lighter exhaust system.
