Powertrain

The first of two available engines for the all-new X4 is a perfect example of 21st-century performance technology. Years ago, a four-cylinder engine would not have afforded the power to satisfy the high-performance appetite of today’s SUVs drivers. However, BMW engineers meticulously developed the X4 to get revolutionary capability from this lean powertrain. The 2019 X4 xDrive30i features the innovative 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine. Thanks to the use of lightweight but super durable materials in the body and sophisticated performance-enhancing technology under the hood (not to mention the twin-scroll turbocharger), the xDrive30i makes 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to hit a top speed of 130 mph and a 0-to-60 time of just six seconds.

BMW also offers the all-new X4 as part of its M Performance series. The 2019 X4 M40i benefits from an upgrade to the beefy 3.0-liter BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine. In addition to the larger engine, the X4 M40i comes standard with BMW’s recognizable M Sport exhaust system, providing that guttural growl from the brand’s greatest hits soundtrack. The X4 M40i provides all the power you’ll need to get you where you’re going every time, blasting off with 355 horses and 365 lb-ft of torque. The result? A lightening-fast 0-to-60 time of just 4.6 seconds.

Thanks to other developments from BMW engineers, the 2019 X4 returns excellent fuel economy. The X45 comes standard with fuel-saving technology like the now-ubiquitous Auto Start-Stop function and the BMW-exclusive Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT, and SPORT+ modes. Thanks to these modern innovations, the X4 xDrive30i returns an EPA-estimated 29 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city, and the X4 M40i returns an EPA-estimated 27 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in the city.**

Smarter Performance

Of course, the new X4 has the brains as well as the brawn. BMW offers the cutting-edge xDrive Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. In concert with the brand’s equally-ingenious Dynamic Stability Control technology, xDrive constantly monitors road conditions through a sophisticated sensory network. The vehicle’s onboard computer calculates the optimal power distribution through a complex algorithm, sending power to whichever wheels can make the most of it. This results in superior traction and responsive handling in any weather or terrain you may encounter.

A similar system works with the brakes, as well. The BMW Performance Control feature uses the same sensory network to independently control the brakes on each wheel.  By controlling braking force individually for each wheel, the X4 can correct any potential understeer or oversteer automatically, providing the driver with nimble agility and aggressive turning on city streets as well as rough terrain. The result is a confidence-inspiring drive built on precision steering.

Last but not least, the driver will also appreciate the Variable Sport Steering feature in the 2019 X4. In addition to adjusting the drivetrain and brakes, the onboard computer can make minute but noticeable adjustments to the steering ratio. This feature comes standard and provides greater confidence at higher speeds, on winding roads, and even while parking.

Luxurious Interior

The 2019 X4 doesn’t just provide incredible performance, it also offers the pinnacle of luxury features on the inside. The infotainment system features a massive 10.25-inch iDrive touchscreen, displaying a world of navigation, entertainment, and other connected features in gorgeous high-definition liquid crystal. iDrive features BMW Navigation with 3D maps, a 200 GB hard drive with 20 GB storage for audio files, a voice command system with state-of-the-art Natural Language Understanding, and Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for map data up to four times annually. Plus, you can control the navigation features, phone functions, and a wealth of streaming and satellite entertainment using simple hand gestures without touching a thing, thanks to the available Gesture Control from BMW.
