Overview

The 2018 BMW 4 Series sees the addition of several updates to BMW’s venerable luxury sport coupe and convertible—a class the automaker helped create with its original 3 Series. The front and rear styling has been noticeably freshened while the steering wheel and interior trim have also been revised. The new 4 Series also features updated suspension tuning and a new virtual instrument panel as an option.

The 2018 4 Series is available as a coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe (four-door) in either 430i or 440i trims, which are mainly differentiated by engine. Standard features include power-folding and heated mirrors, the BMW iDrive infotainment system, and a nine-speaker audio system, while available options range from adaptive headlights and automatic high beams to an M Sport or adaptive suspension. The 2018 BMW 4 Series starts at $42,200* for the Gran Coupe model.

The Perfect Ride for…

BMW enthusiasts looking for an updated take on the classic 3 Series, or anybody in the market for a luxury sport coupe or convertible with a rich legacy of quality. Thanks to this year’s updates, the 2018 4 Series feels fresh and vibrant in the face of the competition. This exceptional sport touring car will liven up your daily commute and wow the office carpool with its smooth-riding style, intuitive technology, and high-quality interior.

Drive & Handling

The 430i comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. All 4 Series models are offered with a standard eight-speed automatic with standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. A six-speed manual is available on Coupe models.

Automatic rear-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated at 27 mpg combined (24 mpg city/34 mpg hwy).** All-wheel-drive Coupe and Gran Coupe models maintain the same combined mpg while dropping a mile on the highway, and 430 Convertibles are rated at 26 combined mpg.** 430i Coupes with the manual transmission are estimated at 25 mpg combined (21 mpg city/33 mpg highway).**

The 440i comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder capable of 326 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Turbo lag is virtually eliminated through the manufacturer’s Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing and direct fuel injection.

Automatic 440i Coupe and Gran Coupe models get an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined, while Convertible models are rated at 24 mpg combined.** The automatic xDrive Coupe and Gran Coupe are also rated at 25 mpg combined—the manual all-wheel-drive coupe and xDrive Convertible fall to 23 mpg combined.**

Key Features

Full-Color Head-Up Display

This available feature projects key driving information, including optional navigation guidance and collision warnings, directly on the windshield to keep you in the loop. Keep an eye on important vehicle specs while maintaining full concentration behind the wheel. In addition, a button on the steering wheel allows you to display the current song and change radio stations.

iDrive 6.0

The latest version of BMW’s renowned infotainment system, iDrive 6.0 includes natural language understanding for more intuitive, conversational voice commands. The system comes with a 6.5-inch center display screen, controller, and eight programmable memory buttons so you can personalize your connected driving experience.

Alternative Options

The 2 Series is the entry model in the BMW coupe lineup, and it just got an update for the 2017 model year with two new engine options. The 2 Series boasts all the luxury and performance heritage of its larger siblings in a more compact, highly maneuverable package. If you find yourself yearning for those extra doors (and find yourself craving a more traditional four-door experience than the 4 Series Gran Coupe), consider the 3 Series sedan. Changes for 2017 include the addition of the 330i and 330e iPerformance models, as well as some tweaks to equipment options.
